Story

The story

A branch manager learns that a complaint has been filed against her with the Department of Labor, accusing her of gender discrimination. In truth, she had secured paid menstrual and maternity leave for the women on her staff, and a family support allowance for the men, so that no one would feel slighted. Now a viral post claims the company gives male employees an extra thousand dollars a month, and colleagues rush to confirm it with stories of their own.

Among the loudest voices are Roxy Hunt, who was passed over for a promotion, and her own assistant, Ingrid Chase, whom she had hired, mentored and helped with money. Both women describe favoritism and humiliation that the manager knows never happened as told. Facing a staff meeting and a profit target that could cost her the job, she decides to become the villain they have already decided she is, and cancels every company benefit beyond the basic contract.

With the whole office in an uproar and a strike brewing, she must decide how far to go.

Opening excerpt

Out of the blue, I get a call from the Department of Labor. The officer tells me they received a complaint, accusing me of gender discrimination. Apparently, my treatment of the male and female employees is extremely unequal.

I'm left feeling utterly bewildered.

Out of compassion for my employees, I give the female employees paid leave during their periods and pregnancy.
