Story

The story

Ethan was born with two hearts, a peculiarity that gave his parents joy only because his older brother Jason suffered from a congenital heart defect. Ethan's purpose was to keep Jason alive. Then he met Kitty, a doctor, and married her, believing she would finally give him the family love he craved.

When Jason's heart begins to fail, Kitty becomes fixated on Ethan donating one of his own. She refuses to believe him when he insists he has only one heart left, that the other already beats inside her. She signs the consent forms herself and forces him onto the operating table, while her colleagues, assuming Jason is her husband, mock Ethan as a selfish seducer.

Hours later, Kitty carries Ethan's heart to Jason and never looks back. Alone on the cold table, Ethan's monitor falls silent, and the doctors dismiss him as deserving of his fate. Days pass before Kitty even thinks to check on him.

Opening excerpt

I was born with a peculiarity: two hearts beating inside my chest.

It was the only thing about me that ever brought my parents any joy.

Because my older brother, Jason, was born with a congenital heart defect.

The only reason I existed was to ensure he would live.

Then I met Kitty, and we got married.
