The Boyfriend Test

Raised to always choose the cheapest option, Emily grows up and brings home Chad, a bleached-blond boyfriend in a studded leather jacket who greets her mother with a handshake that leaves her hand shaking. Her mother is horrified by his look and his job as a security guard earning $3,500 a month, but Emily insists he treats her well: a $7 boba tea, a McDonald's combo with the toy.

Her mother, who once chose the $1 water and the $16 noodles, is unconvinced and summons Emily's father home from the factory with a threat of divorce. At dinner Chad boasts that his $4,000, or $4,500 with weekend delivery work, beats Dad's $2,800, and jokes that Emily cannot even order at a boba shop.

As Dad's chopsticks slam down and Chad's chair crashes to the floor, Emily's parents demand to know what spell she is under.
