Story

The story

Verity's parents were murdered in their home, and their company was collapsing. Her fiancé abandoned her and married Sylvie Gaines instead. At the funeral, his older brother Monty Griffith, a police officer, proposed and promised to uncover the truth. She accepted, and for five years the case stayed cold while he cared for her.

Then she overhears Monty telling Detective Bishop that Sylvie was the only suspect, yet he dropped the investigation and believes in her. He admits he would do anything to keep Sylvie happy, even die for her. Verity realizes her marriage was never love—only a way to watch her and shield the murderer.

On Monty's phone she finds the hidden case files and thousands of photos of Sylvie, her own face cropped out. Pregnant and betrayed, she cancels her documents and plans to leave.

My parents were brutally murdered and dismembered at home. At the time, our company was on the verge of going bankrupt.

I begged my fiancé for help, but he turned his back on me—and went on to marry Sylvie Gaines in a so-called “wedding of the century.”
