Story

The story

At a seventh-anniversary dinner, Corey Graham notices his lifelong best friend, Darren Blackburn, suddenly attentive to his wife, Deanna Cunningham — tying her apron, taking the seat and drink meant for Corey, and being served the lemon halibut that has always been Corey's favorite. When the guests leave, Corey calmly asks Deanna for a divorce, and she accuses him of twisting a few careless gestures into betrayal.

Corey answers with the details she overlooked, then with old wedding photographs: Darren's tears and the direction of his gaze. Deanna warns him not to ruin her grandfather's eightieth birthday and walks out, leaving him among the dirty dishes.

That night Corey follows her to Blackline Club, Darren's bar, and through the door of Room 999 hears the friends who dined at his table laughing at him. Inside, Darren and Deanna speak of a child on the way — and of the child-free marriage Corey once asked her for.
