Story

The story

After the New Year, Isaac Cooper's former students return to visit him, and he treats them to dinner. When they meet his wife, Iris, surprise flickers in their eyes. In the private room, the students tease the affectionate couple, but excusing herself to the restroom, Iris overhears them say they thought Mr. Cooper's wife would be Lilith Walker, and that she looks so much like her.

From that night on, small things unsettle her: the clothes Isaac chooses for her, the music he skips in the car, the home designed in a style she never liked. Then she sees a group chat planning a welcome party for Lilith, using Isaac's birthday as the excuse, and Isaac's own reply that he will be there.

On his birthday, Iris wears a black dress of her own choosing and walks into a room filled with white bellflowers, where a woman in white steps forward to greet Isaac.

Opening excerpt

They greet us warmly, but when they first see me, there is a hint of surprise in their eyes.

In the private room, Isaac takes my hand.

Everyone starts teasing us. "Mr. and Mrs. Cooper are so loving. I'm so jealous!"

I lower my head shyly and excuse myself to the restroom, only to overhear two of his students chatting.

"I was startled just now. I thought Mr. Cooper's wife would be Lilith Walker."
