Story

The story

Jamie has spent her life protecting her younger brother Riley, a gentle, tearful young man who works in a nail and makeup salon and has never been able to stand up for himself. Her husband, Ethan Grant, a successful remodeling contractor, mocks Riley and controls every part of Jamie's life, cutting her off from her family and her job.

Ethan's violence grows worse, and his parents, Martha and Richard Grant, urge her to keep quiet for the sake of the family's reputation. Trapped without money or documents, Jamie hides a burner phone. After Ethan injures her during a drunken rage over a coffee delivery from Riley, she finally dials her brother's number and whispers that she wants to come home.

Riley arrives half an hour later, terrified but determined, and brings someone with him who is ready to face Ethan.

Opening excerpt

My brother has been a "princess" since the day he was born.

At twenty-four, he still hands me water bottles because he supposedly can’t twist the caps off. He won't leave the house without a cloud of expensive cologne, his fingernails are always buffed to a high gloss, and his bag is a graveyard of lip glosses and hand mirrors.

My husband, Ethan Grant, despised him.
