Story

The story

Five years after leaving the country, Claire Jenkins returns to prepare for her wedding to her fiancé, Raymond Fletcher. Barely six hours after landing, she runs into Ethan Vance at a luxury jewelry counter. He grabs her wrist, convinced she has come back for him, and dismisses the diamond ring on her finger as a cheap lie. Claire reminds him that his wife is waiting at home, then slips away when his phone rings with a call from Chloe Stone.

The next morning, Chloe arrives at Claire's new waterfront studio, wearing the practiced air of a high-society wife. She offers Claire a larger downtown space rent-free, then presents a black card tied to Ethan's account and asks Claire to design a full wardrobe for her pregnancy. Claire refuses, and Chloe's sweet facade collapses into open contempt.

Claire has built a life of her own, yet the past she left behind refuses to stay where she put it.

Opening excerpt

Five years after leaving the country, I ran straight into Ethan Vance in front of a luxury jewelry counter.

His eyes went wide with pure disbelief. Before I could take a step back, he lunged forward and grabbed my wrist, refusing to let go.

"Claire, you're finally back!"

"You came back for me, didn't you? Fine, I accept. Let’s get back together!"

Get back together?
