Story
The story
Three days before her wedding, Mallory is dragged into an alley, beaten and nearly raped by a man she recognises as Travis, the brother of Carly. She fights him off with a loose paving brick and calls her fiancé Bradley for help, but he is driving Carly home and refuses to come, accusing Mallory of inventing emergencies to compete with a traumatised girl. A text from Carly then tells her the wedding is postponed.
At the hospital, Bradley finally sees her injuries and promises to stay, but Carly's sobbing call pulls him away with the same words of comfort he once gave Mallory. Carly begs Mallory not to press charges against Travis, and Bradley takes her side, insisting Mallory owes Carly a debt and should call the attack even.
Mallory is left to face the man who once swore no one who hurt her would walk free, now standing between her and the justice she is owed.
Opening excerpt
He slammed me against the damp brick. My blouse ripped down the center seam, the buttons scattering across the pavement like cracked teeth. Then came the slaps—sharp, relentless, ringing through my skull until the metallic taste of blood flooded my mouth.
In the suffocating fog of terror, my fingers scrambled across the gravel until they closed around the rough, jagged edge of a loose paving brick. I swung with everything left in me.
The hollow thud of bone against masonry dropped him.
