Story
The story
Nora Keppler has spent her whole life under her mother's performance scorecard: grades traded for phone time, milkshakes and money. At Crestmont Institute of Technology she holds first place for three straight years, yet her mother hands her a single dollar and cuts off her living expenses, while her brother Tyler gets a new car for barely entering community college.
A call to her future self sends Nora to Founders' Row, where Mr. Bellamy buys the old master paintings her late father Michael Keppler left her for two million eight hundred thousand dollars. But the transfer fails: her account is frozen by a court order over a thirty-thousand-dollar loan she never took out. Her mother admits using her Social Security number to fund Tyler's car, then offers twenty dollars a day to come home and obey the rules.
With her cousin Avery, an attorney, building an identity-theft case, and Professor Cole warning that the university has canceled her project's funding and will clear her lab space in three days, Nora must decide what she is willing to lose.
Opening excerpt
My mother was a veteran HR director, so she built a performance scorecard for my entire childhood.
A perfect test score earned me ten minutes on my phone. Finishing first in school earned me a milkshake.
Whatever I wanted, I had to earn with grades.
After I entered Crestmont Institute of Technology, I spent three straight years at the top of my program.
