My entire body went numb.

When I reached campus and saw Mom sitting there with her chin raised, delayed anger and grief finally surged through me.

Dean Pierce looked me over with clear displeasure. Professor Cole spoke with a hard expression.

"Explain why you owe this much money to an online lender."

I opened my mouth, but Mom cut in with a shrill voice.

"Why do you think? You failed to guide her. My daughter was always obedient before this school led her astray.

"You're supposed to be a respected professor. She follows you around every day, and you noticed nothing?

"This entire department is negligent. Maybe the Bellweather Board of Higher Education should hear about it."

Both administrators went rigid with anger. I stared at her, unable to believe the performance.

"You stole my identity."

She widened her eyes in manufactured shock.

"My daughter never lied until she came here. Someone on this campus has corrupted her.

"I will not support her staying at this institute. I'm withdrawing every dollar of family assistance and demanding that she be removed from university housing.

"No one should try to stop me. I've spent years in Crestmont's HR community, and I know people. You don't want this becoming a public scandal."

I looked to Professor Cole for help, but he sighed and turned his face away.

My fists clenched. Mom never stopped until everyone around her surrendered.

Years earlier, a teacher had moved me to the back row because I was tall. At parent night, Mom had created such a scene that she returned to the school entrance every day.

The teacher eventually moved me to the front just to make her stop.

For the rest of high school, every student avoided me.

I couldn't bear to watch the same nightmare unfold again. My voice broke as I gave in.

"Fine. Give me the leave-of-absence form."

Tears fell as I signed away the semester.

The moment the administrators left, Mom smiled in triumph.

"Now you have nowhere else to go. This is what happens when you stop listening.

"I've designed a real performance plan for you. Until you meet every benchmark, you won't leave my sight again."

I shoved her aside and ran.

She didn't follow. She only shouted after me.

"Run all you want. I gave birth to you. Where do you think you can go without me?"

Once I escaped the building, I called Caleb.

"Mr. Whitaker, I'm sorry, but circumstances have changed. We need to restructure our agreement."

I gave him the shortest possible explanation, then moved the entire research operation into Avenrix's private development lab.

At the university, I had worked alone. Caleb assigned several engineers to me, so the disaster came with one unexpected advantage.

After organizing the new workspace, I received a message from Avery.

"The hearing notices have been served, and we've secured the supporting records."

"Hold on a little longer. Your case is strong."

I gripped my phone, my eyes burning.

This time, I would break free from that twisted family for good.

While I worked until I could barely stand, Mom and Tyler sat on the couch at home, drinking soda and binge-watching television.

Tyler spoke without sitting up.

"Why isn't Nora back yet? You don't think she really ran away, do you?"

Mom gave a dismissive snort.

"Relax. This is resource-isolation strategy.

"She has no money and nowhere to stay. She'll come crawling back."

The doorbell rang.

Mom opened the door, and a process server placed a packet in her hand.

"Notice is hereby given that the consolidated matters of Nora Keppler v. Diane Keppler and the People of Bellweather v. Diane Keppler are scheduled for public hearing on September 15, 2026, in Crestmont County Superior Court."
