Story

The story

House Ashbourne has a rule for its daughters: a suitor must shoot down the ceremonial orb in the family chapel, blindfolded, before he may claim his bride. Evelina was promised as a child to Cedric Hawthorne, an archer hailed as the army's rising star. Yet for five straight years after she came of age, Cedric has missed the orb, and the capital has turned its laughter and contempt on her.

When the Crown Prince arrives to try the shot himself, Evelina overhears Cedric confessing his love for her adopted sister Rosamund, and her own parents and brother Edmund side with them, urging her to wait one more year. The Crown Prince looses his arrow, and the orb falls cleanly into his arms.

Having learned that those closest to her have lied for years, Evelina breaks her engagement and refuses to wait any longer, while Cedric and her family insist she is the one in the wrong.

Opening excerpt

I'd been foretold at birth to become queen. My parents didn't want me to suffer in the palace, so they promised me as a child to the heir of House Hawthorne.

But Cedric Hawthorne, an archer who never missed and was hailed as the army's rising star, failed to hit the orb for five straight years after I came of age.

I went from the most envied girl in the capital to its laughingstock.
