Story

The story

Vince spent five years delivering food to save for a home and a wedding to his girlfriend of five years, Megan Portman. On the day of the bride pickup, her bridesmaids demand cash games, and Megan's best friend Jeanie Westwood insists each of the eighteen women receive 999 dollars. Vince scrapes the money together, only for Megan to raise the send-off fee to 66,000 dollars, claiming her brother Johnny needs it to cover gambling debts.

With the room's relatives watching and recording, Megan refuses to put her shoes on unless he pays, and Jeanie mocks his protests. Realising he is seen as nothing more than an ATM, Vince calls off the wedding, phones his real estate agent Gabe Collins to list the house, and walks out past the waiting wedding cars.

He rides his old delivery scooter to the hotel, where the welcome arch still reads congratulations, and thinks of his mother Cathy Ridley waiting inside.

Opening excerpt

I spent five years delivering food and saved up enough to buy a home, all so I could marry my girlfriend of five years, Megan Portman.

On the day of the bride pickup, the bridesmaids went all out with their pre-wedding mini games, and I happily played along.

But once every cash envelope had been handed out, I realized something was off.
