Story

The story

Lyra has spent a fortune on a merman named Xir, tending his wounds and giving him the finest house. Yet Xir calls her ugly and vulgar, and falls instead for her pretty stepsister, Thea Jackson, treasuring a sticker Thea gave him as an afterthought. The two cuddle before Lyra and urge her to step aside, certain she is only pretending not to want Xir's love.

Lyra wants no such thing. She touches the burn scars on her face, scars she took as a child when she rushed into a fire to save Thea, and counts the days until Xir comes of age, for legend says a potion ground from a merfolk's heart can heal any scar. When she says plainly that she wants his heart, Xir and Thea only laugh, taking it for a lover's plea.

With three days left, Lyra must keep Xir calm and his heart's power intact, even as he demands to leave with Thea. Neither of them believes her, and Thea is sure she has stolen something Lyra cherished.

Opening excerpt

I spent a ton of money to treat his injuries, but he said I wasn't sincere.

I gave him the best house, but he called me vulgar, while treasuring the sticker my stepsister gave him as an afterthought.

They cuddled right in front of me, eager to make me step aside.

"It's just a simple sticker, but it's the greatest treasure ever to me! Women like you who only care about money would never understand that. So just give up already, Lyra. You will never measure up to Thea no matter what you do."
