Story
The story
Six months after a stranger followed Claire through an underground parking garage, she still cannot ride an elevator alone. For her thirtieth birthday, her husband Ian gives her an "Exposure Therapy Blind Box," promising that the final compartment will cure her fear.
The first clue sends her to Level P3 of a retail galleria, where the lights die and a figure in a dark ball cap lunges at her car door. Claire empties a canister of pepper spray before the work lights reveal Megan, Ian's business partner, with a camera rig recording nearby. Ian does not comfort Claire; he inspects Megan's eyes and scolds Claire for going too hard. At home, Megan stays in the guest room, and Claire finds the agency's production notes on Ian's laptop: her terror was staged as content, with conditions for holding the lights and capturing her reaction.
Claire packs a suitcase, but Ian blocks the corridor with a second box marked "Stage Two: Lift" and pushes her luggage into the elevator. When the car dies at the tenth floor, three knocks rattle the wall and a modulated voice warns her not to turn around.
