Story

The story

Bennett has spent four years with Lauren, a woman who lets her male best friend Derek, a self-styled dating coach, audit every gesture of affection before she delivers it. On his twenty-eighth birthday, Lauren brings Derek to an upscale seafood bar and feeds him the langoustines Bennett ordered, correcting her technique under Derek's critique while Bennett sits untouched. When Bennett walks out into the winter chill, strangers outside mistake Lauren and Derek for the couple.

Back at their brownstone, Lauren presents a strawberry cake, Derek's favorite and a fruit Bennett cannot stand, and calls his anger a tantrum. She insists Derek is like a brother and that his drills are only helping her understand what men need. Bennett swallows his medicine and answers a waiting email from L'Arpège in Paris, accepting a post as Head Pastry Chef.

What is left of a love that must be rehearsed on another man before it can be offered?

Opening excerpt

My girlfriend’s male best friend was a certified "dating coach."

Every romantic gesture Lauren made toward me had to pass his inspection first. Every touch, every word, every scrap of affection had to be audited, graded, and certified before she felt qualified to deliver it to me.

On my twenty-eighth birthday, Lauren insisted on taking me out to an upscale seafood bar downtown.
