Story
The story
At her wedding, a bride watches a masked stranger stand in for her fiancé, Spencer Prescott. When she calls Spencer by mistake, the speakerphone carries his voice to the whole hall: he mocks her as a pregnant orphan he has kept for twelve years, then turns to flirt with Vivian. Humiliated, she ends the wedding before the crowd and walks away, only for Spencer's groomsmen to trip her, leaving her bleeding.
At the hospital she learns the pregnancy is at risk, and she chooses to end it despite the doctor's warning about the twins and the danger to her own body. Spencer calls to demand she cook for Vivian, then arrives to announce that Vivian will attend the Prescott family dinner in her place and to force her to sign away the house where her parents' ashes are buried.
When he dismisses her pain as a pathetic bid for attention, she finally calls a lawyer to draw up the divorce papers.
Opening excerpt
At our wedding, my fiancé, Spencer Prescott, hired a total stranger to stand in for him as the groom.
The man wore a garish mask printed with Spencer's face, held a prop ring, and actually expected me to go through with the ceremony alongside him.
My hands were shaking as I dialed Spencer's number. I accidentally put the call on speakerphone.
Two seconds later, the sound of ragged breathing blared through the speakers.
