Story
The story
A wife returns from a four-day business trip and, while scrolling an anonymous local forum, finds a housekeeper's post accusing a wealthy employer of paying only fifteen hundred a month despite a promised five thousand. The attached photo of the living room reveals the employer is her own household, and she realizes the money she transfers each month for Carmen's wages is not reaching Carmen.
Her husband Patrick insists Carmen is merely angling for a raise and urges patience, but his composure slips when she proposes replacing the housekeeper. That night a bank alert shows a thirty-thousand-dollar debit from his private account, which he explains away as a favor for a friend. Doubt lingers as a crate of live lobsters arrives at the home.
Trust, money and a household's careful surface begin to crack.
Opening excerpt
On the commuter train back from my four-day business trip, scrolling aimlessly through an anonymous local forum, a venting post caught my eye.
[My employers live in a three-thousand-square-foot luxury condo, but they only pay me fifteen hundred a month.]
Curiosity piqued, I tapped the thread. What followed was a tearful, blistering indictment.
[Rich people are truly the finest hypocrites on earth. When the mistress of the house hired me, she promised five thousand a month plus performance bonuses. But the moment I started, my actual take-home dropped to fifteen hundred.]
