Bank Statements and Broken Vows

Sarah gave up her graphic design job to raise Lily, relying on her mother-in-law Eleanor's promise of a thousand dollars a month. Instead, her husband Mark sent only a hundred dollars at a time, then nothing at all, while she drained her own forty thousand dollars in savings to cover the mortgage, groceries and the baby's needs.

When an audio message plays through the car speakers, Sarah and Eleanor hear Mark laughing with another woman about money meant for Lily's preschool and about keeping his wife in the dark. Eleanor reveals she has sent a thousand dollars a month for four years, over fifty-five thousand in all, and asks how much of it Sarah has seen. Sarah has seen none of it.

Mark returns to the car to find the screen frozen on his messages, and his smile fades.
