Story
The story
On her wedding night the power fails, and by morning Elise finds her new husband Graham in the guest bed with her cousin Kayla. Her mother Marion urges her to swallow the humiliation for the sake of the family name, and Graham spends the following days performing remorse with lilies, jewellery and apologies that Elise refuses.
Then word comes that Graham has been in a car wreck. Elise rushes to the hospital, but outside his room she hears him and his groomsmen laughing: the blackout, the tripped breaker and the crash were all staged, and Marion herself pulled the main switch so Kayla could have him. Graham means to keep Elise, giving her a temporary divorce while Kayla bears his child, certain that blood ties will make her cave.
Elise slips off her wedding ring and drops it in a bin, tells Kayla nothing, and asks Gabriel for the three-year posting in London. Then the transaction alerts begin.
Opening excerpt
In the pitch-black hallway, my brand-new husband, stumbling drunk on cheap champagne and bourbon, supposedly mistook the guest bedroom for ours.
The next morning, a sharp, piercing shriek tore through the silence of the house.
My head was still pounding, heavy with the residual fog of alcohol, as I stumbled down the corridor. My mother and I pushed the guest room door open. There, tangled in the rumpled white sheets, were my husband and my cousin Kayla. Naked.
