Story

The story

After the SATs, Helena's four childhood friends invite her to play Take the Dare. Ronald Peyton dares her to give up Queencity U and sign a contract to attend Westborder U with them, and she agrees. When the acceptance letter arrives, she finds a group chat on the projector screen: the boys and Melissa (Imperia) planned four fake applications to bait her away, so Melissa could take her place at Queencity U.

Confronted, they admit it and insist Melissa is frail and cannot adjust to the northwestern region, while Helena is independent and will be fine. They ask her to edit their shared childhood videos so Melissa can pretend she was always part of their past, and Xavier Riverson even takes her camera.

Then the research institute's professor texts Helena: the ride arrives in Imperia in 48 hours. She confirms, turns off her phone, and begins returning everything they once gave her, ready to leave them behind.

Opening excerpt

The four boys said it was Westborder U. Ronald Peyton slid his application over to me and smiled as he tapped on my score. More than 1400. "I dare you to give up Queencity U and come to Westborder with us. Whoever backs off is a loser."

That night, I signed the contract right in front of them. Everyone started egging Ronald on after I confessed, and he said yes.
