Story

The story

Heather, a poor food-cart vendor, collapses and dies at a construction site, her stiff hand still clutching an old tin lunchbox. Her ghost drifts to the mansion of her daughter Chloe's wealthy biological mother, watching Chloe try on designer dresses and head off to school in a miniskirt. When classmates ask which mother she prefers, Chloe furiously denies having an adoptive mother, calling her kidnapper and their life together a living hell.

Hovering unseen, Heather recalls finding the abandoned baby fifteen years ago, paying a fortune to cure her meningitis, and losing her boyfriend Jason for it. She remembers little Chloe defending her, then the teenage Chloe growing ashamed of her greasy truck and running off with a rich punk.

Now the biological mother glares at Heather and accuses her of kidnapping her baby.

Opening excerpt

It has been two days. My body is already bloated from the heat, but my hand, stiff with rigor mortis, is still gripping that old tin lunchbox.
