Story

The story

In the Prescott household, the family's only Oxford recommendation letter was meant for Selena, who earned it through six months of late nights and more than 300 designs. At the yearly family support vote, her brother Evan, her mother Alice and her father Richard hand it to her younger sister Camilla instead, because Camilla is heartbroken and needs Europe. Selena says nothing and starts packing.

Her own work has already won her direct admission to Harvard, yet her family keeps treating her as the tough, sensible one who will always give way. Evan offers her a credit card; her mother orders her to clear out the sunny study that has been her art studio so it can become Camilla's walk-in closet. Then Camilla carelessly destroys the miniature city Selena spent three months building for a competition, and her father calls it just a pile of wood.

As Selena boards her flight to Boston, her mentor Adrian waits on the line, and the house she is leaving has no idea what it is losing.

Opening excerpt

"I vote for Camilla too." My mother kept filing her nails as she talked. "Selena can go to community college. Camilla's grades are bad.
