Story

The story

Kathy Deleon, the long-lost daughter of a wealthy family, returns to her biological parents only to watch their company collapse. Her father is dead, her brother Andre is crippled, and her mother Evelyn swings between cursing her and clinging to her. Kathy shreds her college acceptance letter and works endless jobs to save them, even auctioning her virginity for Andre's surgery.

But when she brings the money to the hospital, she overhears the truth: Andre is not paralyzed, her father is alive, and the family is testing her loyalty. The fake daughter Natalie mocks her sacrifice, and the loan sharks they set on her demand more and more. When Kathy refuses to give up the locket from her orphanage director, Evelyn's mask slips and the family's cruelty deepens.

Kathy has repaid the debt of her birth. Now she must decide whether to keep proving herself to a family that sees her only as a leech.

Opening excerpt

Overwhelmed by massive debts, my dad jumped to his death.

My brother was left crippled by vengeful creditors.

My mother, unraveled, would one moment tear at my hair, cursing my existence, and the next, cling to me, sobbing and vowing to cherish me.

To save them, I shredded my college acceptance letter and took every job I could find.

When my brother's condition worsened, I auctioned off my virginity to fund his surgery.
