Story

The story

On her son Tim's fifth birthday, Chloe discovers messages on her husband David's phone from a woman named Lily, revealing an affair that has lasted for months. Confronted, David admits the betrayal, insists Chloe and Tim are his real family, and blocks Lily in front of her. Chloe hides her pain to protect her son's celebration.

At the party, a voice message from Lily threatens to jump from a roof. David runs out, knocking hot soup onto Tim, who suffers second-degree burns. At the hospital, Lily contacts Chloe directly, claiming she is pregnant and sending an ultrasound and a ring David designed. When David finally arrives, he asks Chloe to consider a temporary divorce so Lily can register the baby.

As Chloe watches her sleeping son, she recalls their ten years together and asks David if he still loves her.

Opening excerpt

On my son's fifth birthday, I found messages on my husband David’s phone about a hotel room with another woman. He called her baby, bought her jewelry, and promised a Disney trip after our party.

I confronted him. He admitted to cheating but swore we were his real family. After eight years of marriage, I couldn’t ruin our son’s birthday, so I pretended nothing happened.

Then a voice message played aloud: “David, I’m on the roof. I’ll jump if you don’t come now!” He bolted for the door. I told him coldly, “If you leave, we’re done.”
