Story
The story
On moving day, Lola reserves the ground-floor suite for her mother, who uses a cane and has three surgical steel plates in her leg. But the room has already been claimed by Loretta, the mother of her husband Glenn's deceased ex-wife, and Lola's mother is sent to a fourth-floor bedroom in a building with no elevator. Glenn is unmoved, insisting Loretta is alone in the world and that he has a moral obligation to her as her former son-in-law.
When Lola demands the rooms be switched back, Glenn warns her not to upset Loretta's heart condition. The next morning he breaks his promise to drive her mother to an orthopedic checkup, standing in line for Loretta's pastries instead, and Lola must help her mother through the rain toward the bus stop. Eight weeks pregnant and hiding it, Lola watches her mother fall on the wet pavement.
