Story

The story

Everett once guarded Naomi like a sacred relic, but the man who ambushed her in an alley was hired by her own husband as penance for slapping Alyssa. He calls Naomi damaged goods and says Alyssa is pure, untouched, everything Naomi never was. In the car, the leather interior has been replaced with baby-pink quilted upholstery and Alyssa's gardenia perfume; the plush bunny on the dash matters more to him than Naomi's coughing fit. At the estate, Alyssa waits in Naomi's silk robe.

Naomi and Everett grew up together in a church orphanage, sharing the last heel of bread. Ten years ago she stepped in front of a loan shark's blade to save him, trading her dignity so he could live, and locked the truth away. Now he calls that sacrifice an irreparable regret.

When Naomi offers to step aside, Everett refuses to let her go. Then a message arrives: three days, and they are coming to bring Miss Beaumont home.

Opening excerpt

The day the man who assaulted me was released from prison, the very first thing he did was ambush me on my walk home.

He grabbed me by the hair and dragged me into the damp shadows of the alley. His breath was sour, hot and rancid against my collarbone.
