Story

The story

At a party game of Truth or Dare, Valerie announces that she and Cameron checked into a hotel together the night before her wedding to Nathan. The room turns to Nathan with pity, waiting for him to break. Instead he calmly reveals a secret of his own: he has a seven-year-old daughter, born before the wedding.

Valerie insists it is impossible, since she has known him for eight years, but suspicion creeps into her eyes. Cameron, gentle and tearful, presses Nathan to bring the girl around, certain he is bluffing. When the game resumes, Valerie takes a dare with Cameron and kisses him in front of everyone.

Nathan throws his glass of ice water in Cameron's face and tells Valerie they are getting a divorce. Their friends beg him to stay, calling it only a game, and he walks out.

It was during a game of Truth or Dare that Valerie decided to drop the bomb.

"Actually, the night before our wedding, Cameron and I checked into a hotel together."

In a heartbeat, the air was sucked out of the room. Every pair of eyes shifted to me, heavy with a suffocating, pitying weight.

Valerie leaned back against the plush leather of the VIP booth sofa, nursing her drink. She looked completely at ease, just waiting for me to lose my mind.
