Story

The story

After an all-nighter spent perfecting a presentation for a notoriously demanding client, a chronically exhausted corporate drone boards a three-hour flight hoping for a restorative nap. She fastens her seatbelt, sticks a neon-yellow note reading "Please do not wake for meal service" to the seatback, and closes her eyes.

But the flight attendant refuses to let her sleep. Again and again she shakes the passenger awake to offer a meal, then to ask why she won't eat, then to insist the food is complimentary. When the weary traveler finally snaps, the attendant's eyes fill with tears, and nearby passengers begin gossiping that she is cruel for giving a young girl a hard time.

Trapped in a cabin full of watching strangers, the woman must defend her one simple request: to be left alone until the plane lands.

Opening excerpt

I was trying to catch up on sleep on my flight when a flight attendant unexpectedly shook me awake.

"Excuse me, ma'am. I noticed you didn't order a meal. Are you feeling unwell?"

I shook my head. "Just tired. I'm going to sleep. No food for me, thank you."

But ten minutes later, the exact same flight attendant woke me up again.

"Are you absolutely sure you don't want to eat? We have a wide variety of options for our in-flight service today.
