Story

The story

On the first day of their relationship, Chloe receives a Venmo request from her new boyfriend Austin: half the gas for driving her home, $1.40. He insists they split everything fifty-fifty, calling it respect for her independence. She sends two dollars, he refunds sixty cents, and she dumps him on the spot.

Austin refuses to accept it. He calls, then shows up at her apartment with fruit, insisting he chased her for two months and told his whole family about her. When she refuses to take him back, he sits down on the hallway floor and vows to stay until she agrees.

Chloe watches through the peephole as he scrolls on his phone outside her door, wondering how she misread him so completely.

I stared at the screen for half a second, almost bursting into laughter.

I thought he was joking. But before I could reply, his next message popped up.
