Story

The story

Abigail Graham and Serena Vance are notorious rivals at their company, battling over deals and over men. When Abigail finally chooses Art Sterling, their new superior, she believes she has found love. For two years they are inseparable, on the cusp of marriage, and the news of her pregnancy fills her with joy.

Then, in the break room, Abigail overhears Art and Serena: his courtship is a calculated conspiracy, and he is marrying her only for Serena. Reeling, Abigail decides to end the pregnancy and calls Marcus Thorne. She tells her father the wedding is off, then faces Art at home, testing him with questions he answers only with lies.

At a dinner with Mr. Evans for the Starlight project, Art brings Serena and pushes Abigail to drink despite her pregnancy, then tries to hand her hard-won project to Serena. Abigail refuses to yield, meeting Art's glare without flinching.

Opening excerpt

After three years of relentless competition for the same man, I suddenly found it utterly pointless. So, I chose Art Sterling, our new superior, who had actively sought me out.
