Story
The story
A woman with a sharp instinct for family warfare marries into a gentle, soft-spoken household, and for a while life is easy. Then, in her third month of pregnancy, her husband's grandmother arrives at the door to lay down the law. The old woman kills the dog the wife raised for three years and turns it into a stew, then brags about it at the dinner table. She demands the wife kneel and kowtow to a turtle she has kept for forty years, acknowledging it as her God-Grandmother.
The wife plays along, but she is not the fragile glass her in-laws take her for. Her husband Liam wants to flee to a hotel; his parents Martha and David are terrified, and the old woman has a ledger of debts and a scheme to seize their house for her eldest grandson's wedding. When a slap lands on Martha's face, the wife lets Buster, the family's Belgian Malinois, off his leash.
Acknowledging a God-Grandmother is easy. Sending her off is another matter entirely.
