Story

The story

Summer's mother has spent years telling everyone she sends her daughter two thousand dollars a month, even as she actually sends two hundred. When the family gathers for her young cousin Tyler's birthday, Summer arrives in a designer dress and lays down a thick envelope of cash as a gift, leaving her mother stunned and demanding to know where the money came from.

As the table watches, Summer calmly repeats her mother's own story back to her, then turns the conversation to a ten-thousand-dollar loan her mother took from Aunt Sarah and never repaid, even though Sarah's son has put his wedding on hold waiting for it. Cornered, her mother slaps her and accuses her of earning the money shamefully.

Summer's relatives begin to question everything her mother has claimed, and the family celebration becomes the stage for a reckoning she has carefully planned.

Opening excerpt

My mother’s favorite hobby is playing the rich housewife.

Freshman year of college, she sent me exactly two hundred dollars a month. Rain or shine, never a penny more. But to the outside world? She claimed she was wiring me two grand a month.

Whenever people asked why I dressed in thrift store finds despite my "generous" allowance, she’d sigh and say, "Oh, Summer is just so frugal. She saves every penny for a rainy day."
