When the police call Juliet to say her husband Jean Roberson has been caught in a prostitution raid, she rushes to the station — and finds him shielding a weeping woman, Gwen Ellison. Jean defends Gwen, pushes Juliet away, and calls her narrow-minded for seeing everything as dirty. Gwen, the widow Jean has spent half a year rescuing, cries that Juliet should never humiliate her husband in public.

Juliet remembers Jean's promise that Gwen would never come between them again. Exhausted, she tells him to keep playing the saint and asks for a divorce. Jean refuses, follows her into the car, and insists on driving Gwen along, explaining that he only followed her to a hotel to save her.
