Story

The story

For ten years, Vivian Shaw has lived in the Grant family as the price of a promise. Her mother died in a fire saving Madam Evelyn Grant and her son Damian, and Vivian grew up in their house, quietly enduring the treatments and humiliations of Damian's infertility. Now, against every odd, she is pregnant with the child the family had prayed for, and tomorrow she is to marry him.

The night before the wedding, a video climbs the trending list. A young woman, Lily Hart, shows off a dark silver tie clip pinned over her chest, a gift from her boss. It is the engagement gift Vivian spent a month polishing by hand, still holding a tiny heart made from her fingerprint and Damian's. When Vivian finds Damian at a private club with Lily, his friends call her an old obligation and a burden, and he offers no denial. He only says he will marry her, then orders her home so as not to ruin the wedding.

Vivian stands in her white dress with the truth in her hands, and one question left: what is she still holding on to?

Opening excerpt

I had spent years paying for Damian Grant’s infertility in every way a woman could.

Doctors, treatments, private clinics, and humiliation I swallowed in silence.

Then, against every odd, I finally got pregnant.

It was the child the Grant family had been waiting for. The miracle Madam Evelyn Grant had prayed for. The one thing Damian had been told he might never have.

On the night before our wedding, I saw a local post climbing the trending list.

[Another day of being the only girl who gets under my boss’s skin.]
