Story

The story

Three years after being institutionalized, Harper is finally brought home by her psychiatrist husband Chad. But the house is no longer hers: Mary, Chad's clinical assistant, lives there with their son, and divorce papers are quietly waiting. When Harper hears a child's whimper trapped beneath an overturned wardrobe, Mary insists her own son is safely locked in the playroom and Chad offers pills to stop the hallucinations.

Harper remembers the day she lost her baby differently. She recalls Mary holding the knife, stroking her flat stomach and claiming she carried Chad's child. Yet Chad, who once changed his major to psychiatry to save her, now calls it a dissociative psychotic episode and warns her to behave or return to the ward.

Confined to a windowless storage room with her unborn child's belongings, Harper must decide whether the blood she saw was real or whether the entire world has lost its mind.

Opening excerpt

“When are you telling her about the divorce?” Mary asked.

“Not yet. I don’t want to trigger a relapse,” Chad muttered, avoiding my gaze as he hugged her.

Hidden in the hall, I listened until numbness set in. Entering the master bedroom, I found unfamiliar furniture and a huge family portrait above the bed. A bitter laugh escaped me.

From beneath the overturned oak wardrobe came faint whimpers.
