Story

The story

Trapped in a fire, Serena is pulled from the flames only after her husband Nathan Carter carries out Vivian Ashford first. Half her back is left deeply burned, and while she lies in pain, Nathan soothes Vivian, who claims she has lost her memory and her face is ruined. When Vivian's brother Jason Ashford is invoked as the man who died saving Nathan, Nathan swears he will care for her forever.

Serena quietly calls her lawyer, Derek Hale, to draft divorce papers, then books a train ticket south. Nathan's parents, Robert and Elaine Carter, still refuse to acknowledge her, while Vivian is given the heirloom bracelet. Even as Nathan tends Serena's wounds, he plans trips with Vivian and defends her against evidence that she cut the electrical cable herself.

As the baby she carries stirs, Serena decides to cut every tie, shares included, before she leaves.

Opening excerpt

As the flames roared higher, he just hastily said.

"Wait for me."

The heat made every breath burn.

Ten minutes later, the firefighters finally arrived. By then, half my back had suffered deep burns, and the pain was searing.

Late that night, needle-sharp pain kept me from sleeping.

A woman's panicked voice rang out from the room next door.

"Where am I? Who am I?"

Then she screamed.

"My face is ruined!"
