Story
The story
Adam Corin wakes on the day he first discovered his wife had quietly divorced him. In his past life, Michelle ruled the Obsidian Syndicate beside him, then discarded him for Milo, a fragile young card-shuffler she sheltered. When Adam struck the boy, Michelle's men broke his sister Lucy's legs, and she died in his arms. Now he has a second chance: he pawns his jewelry, books two black-market flights to a non-extradition country, and arranges Lucy's quiet discharge from the clinic where she is recovering.
But Michelle's world does not let anyone leave. Her guards bow to Milo as master of the house, her rivals want her blood, and a knife finds Adam in the dark. When her Maybach passes the alley, she shields Milo's eyes and drives on, leaving her bleeding husband to be dragged away.
He wakes in her physician's care, listening through the door as Michelle orders that Lucy be brought to the estate as leverage. This time, Adam will not beg.

Since my second chance at life, I ignored every single one of Michelle’s calls. The texts she sent, I deleted the second they hit my screen.
Instead, I spent my nights drowned in the neon haze of local dive bars, flanked by cheap booze and a rotating crowd of young, wide-eyed girls who hung on my every word.
It was on my eighth night of binging, as I stumbled up the driveway of our estate, barely holding myself upright, that I found Michelle blocking the front door. Her shadow stretched long and menacing under the porch light.
