Story

The story

In the isolated hollow of Blackwood Creek, a girl of age is chosen each year as the Patron’s Bride. She must enter the sacred cavern to lie with the Patron, the entity the town has worshipped for generations. If she emerges alive, she becomes a revered Matriarch and any child conceived is said to be blessed with fortune; if she dies, the town simply waits for the next Bride. No one ever wanted to be chosen—families fled the valley to escape the selection.

Elara volunteers. She has a hunger, a desperate curiosity to know what a god feels like. Elder Hawthorne and the town’s women prepare her, and Martha drills her in the secret words and one critical rule: no matter what happens in the cavern, she must not open her eyes. Elara believes her blessed womb will give the Patron as many children as he desires.

Blindfolded, she is led up the mountain, her bleeding palms stinging as the ancient music crawls under her skin.
