Story
The story
On a graduation trip to Iceland, Lauren watches her boyfriend Thomas wrap his scarf around her college roommate Sophie, then send her into the freezing wind to chase Sophie's. Stranded in the dark for six hours, she returns to find them tangled under the duvet, laughing over photographs. The warm water he left her has gone stone-cold.
Thomas and Lauren grew up together; Sophie was her roommate, and Lauren introduced them. Now the two photographers share a world of aperture and lighting she cannot enter. He remembers her cycle and her shellfish allergy, yet the table fills with seafood and the spare sweater never reaches her shoulders. When a fever takes her, he calls it a ruined schedule.
She books the earliest flight home and cancels their reservations. Some auroras, she decides, are not meant to be chased.
Opening excerpt
It was our graduation trip—a two-week escape to Iceland to chase the Northern Lights. But when Sophie’s scarf slipped and whipped away into the freezing wind, the fragile warmth of our trip shattered.
My boyfriend, Thomas, immediately unknotted his own heavy wool scarf and wrapped it snugly around her neck.
He turned to me, his voice sharp against the howling wind. "Lauren, go grab that for Sophie. You know it’s her favorite."
