Story

The story

After a car crash leaves Caroline Prescott in a hospital bed, her fiancé Spencer Harrington sits at her side with a confession: he feels nothing for her, and the marriage their families arranged is only a merger. The woman he truly loves, Paige, is a girl his foundation once put through college. When Caroline moves to call off the engagement, Spencer grips her wrist and warns that cancelling the merger would cost both families millions, and that press scrutiny would destroy Paige.

Overhearing Spencer tell a friend that Paige is fragile and needs him, Caroline texts her father, Richard Prescott, to end the engagement. She tells him only that she and Spencer are incompatible. Then Paige sends a friend request, followed by photos of a life with Spencer that Caroline never knew.

Caroline must decide what to do with a decade of devotion to a man who never intended to let her go.

Opening excerpt

When I finally blinked my eyes open, the harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital room momentarily blinded me. And then, there was Spencer. He was sitting by my bedside, his handsome face etched with a textbook display of agonizing worry.

Seeing him like that, a sudden, mischievous spark ignited in my chest. I decided to play a little game. Feigning a perfectly blank, confused stare, I tilted my head and whispered, "Who are you?"

Spencer froze. The breath hitched in his throat.

Underneath the blanket, I was secretly smiling.
