The story
When senior planner Grace Adler brings her manager a refund form to sign, Mr. Miller erupts over the $8,000 total, ignoring her explanation that her prepayments were far larger and her refund rate the lowest in the department. He declares the loss will come out of her salary, and accounting soon confirms it: her $10,000 monthly pay is cut to a $500 stipend, announced to the whole company.
After Grace asks publicly what her mistake actually was, Mr. Miller demotes her to junior designer at $2,000 a month with no commissions, while praising her colleague Lily. Grace quietly saves the evidence, promises her refunds will be zero, and deactivates her booking profile.
Then the founder of Thorne Industries, Julian Thorne, arrives in person with an urgent project, and Mr. Miller promises a proposal in three days. He walks straight to Grace's desk and tells her to take the file. She refuses.

When I took the refund form to my manager for his signature, he slammed his hand on the desk and pointed a finger square at my nose.
“An $8,000 refund? What the hell kind of job are you doing? Ben over there only had $700 in refunds, Lily only had $300! Even Chris, who had the most, was only at $1,000. How is it that you have this much?”
I patiently explained, “Ben’s total prepayments were only $6,000. Lily’s were $3,000.”
“My prepayments totaled $200,000.”
“In terms of percentage, my refund rate is the lowest in the department.”
