Story
The story
At one in the morning, Cassidy is jolted awake by a burst of birthday singing from the dorm room across the hall. Peering out, she glimpses candlelight and a huddle of figures through the balcony doors, rolls her eyes at the late-night racket, and goes back to sleep with earplugs in.
The next day, screams wake the building: ten students in that room are dead. Police seal off the campus and question everyone, and Cassidy is singled out. Detective Miller stays stoic while Officer Ben makes small talk, teasing her about resisting her nosy instincts and dodging her questions about how the victims died.
Summoned back the next day, she is pressed again on what she saw and heard, and on the exact time she woke. As the officers fixate on her account, Cassidy begins to suspect they are looking at her.
Opening excerpt
Midnight. One AM. I was jolted awake by a sudden burst of "Happy Birthday" from the dorm room across the hall.
I stepped out to take a look. Through the glass doors of their balcony, I could faintly make out the flickering glow of candles and a huddled group of figures.
I rolled my eyes, utterly speechless. *Are these people insane?* Celebrating a birthday in the dead of night, they'd accidentally set the place on fire with all those candles and no proper lighting.
