Story
The story
A wounded merman is bought at a clearance price, delivered bound in a crate with a plastic muzzle and a yellow tag stamped 531. The seller warned he was stubborn, refusing to sing or shed a tear, yet he hums and weeps at the slightest thing. His ice-blue eyes match those of a merman the buyer met once as a child, which is why the discount link from her best friend Serena was enough.
He scratches her arm during feeding, scattering her silver bracelet's beads, then gathers every bead from the pool and offers them back with a timid smile. When she sears salmon for him, he burns his tongue and cries pearls. She names him Caspian and learns from support that mermen take freshwater only from live prey.
Holding out ice, she feels his cold fingers close around her wrist as he takes a cube with his lips. She still intends to release him once his wounds heal, unaware of what his gifts mean.
Opening excerpt
I managed to buy a severely wounded merman at a bargain price.
The seller warned me that he was incredibly stubborn: he refused to sing, and he wouldn't shed a single tear.
Yet, as I looked at the merman currently humming a soft tune and crying at the slightest provocation, I couldn't help but wonder if they had sent me the wrong creature.
Later on, he kept plucking his own scales and presenting them to me, looking incredibly anxious, as if he couldn't stand being near me.
Once his wounds healed, I drove him to the shore and released him into the wild.
