Story

The story

Seven years ago, Madeline Wright's three-year-old daughter Sophie fell from a penthouse balcony. Her son Hudson, the only witness, told police he saw his mother push her. Her husband Nathaniel, a brilliant defense attorney, secured her a maximum-security sentence, and her biological parents, the wealthy Montgomerys, disowned her.

Now Nathaniel and twelve-year-old Hudson arrive at a rural farmhouse belonging to Madeline's adoptive brother Luke, demanding she donate bone marrow to Isabella Montgomery, whose leukemia has relapsed. The warden says Madeline died two years ago; a neighbor insists Luke is paralyzed in a hospital and his sister has been dead for two years. Nathaniel refuses to believe it, threatening Luke's pay and then setting the farmhouse ablaze.

Madeline, a tethered soul, watches her husband and son destroy the only proof she was ever loved, unable to make them hear her.

Opening excerpt

But it was my son, the only witness, who pointed his trembling finger at me and told the police I was the murderer.

My husband, a ruthless and brilliant defense attorney, was so consumed by grief and rage that he personally ensured I was sentenced to maximum security.
