My Hidden Identity Is a Prophet

Yvette is the fourth daughter in the Chad family, a twelve-year-old girl whose grandmother once doted on her in the hope she would bring a younger brother into the house. When her mother falls pregnant again and a village doctor promises a boy, the family's hopes soar and Yvette's schooling is refused. Yet the baby is born stillborn, and Yvette begins to notice that the things she says seem to come true.

A Taoist priest arrives after the burial, warning the family to watch their words and deeds, and claiming the dead child's spirit has been summoned back by a lingering resentment. Her grandmother takes the warning as divine punishment, while her parents cling to the promise of reincarnation and try again for a son.

But when her mother, not yet forty, learns she has entered menopause, the Chad family line stands on the edge of ending. Yvette watches the household that measures daughters in dowries and sons in hope, and wonders what her own words will bring.
