The story
Six years ago, Sadie turned off her father's alarm as a small kindness. He rushed out, crashed, and died. Her mother, Laura, never forgave her, blaming her for taking Marcus away. On New Year's Eve she locked Sadie out in the snow; when Sadie's acceptance to Blackwood University arrived, her sister Harper's bitter words made Laura tear the letter apart. Sadie grew up as the curse of the house.
Then the phone rang. Marcus was alive, a federal agent who had faked his death for a deep-cover mission. He was coming home. Racing to tell her mother, Sadie was dragged into a black sedan by a man with one ear, who blamed her father for killing his crew and aimed the car at Laura.
Sadie wrenched the wheel and died in the crash. As a ghost, she watched Laura pick up her Seraph Charm and hand it to a detective without recognizing it. Marcus is returning, and no one yet knows Sadie is gone.
Opening excerpt
I thought my dad was working too hard. That was the only reason. I turned off his alarm.
Because of that small, misguided act of kindness, Dad missed a crucial early meeting. Rushing to the office, he was involved in a car accident and died instantly.
My mother never forgave me.
At the funeral, she clawed and hammered at my chest, sobbing that she wished it had been me instead of him.
One New Year’s Eve, she locked me outside in the bitter snow, wearing only a thin nightgown.
