Story

The story

In the third year of the Scorch, humanity survives beneath a dead ozone layer inside the subterranean Citadel, a three-tiered world. Aurora and her husband Lucas, a founder and investor, live on privileged Level Two, while Level Three has collapsed into the lawless Warrens.

When Lucas carries a sick girl named Anya home from the Warrens, he invokes the population caps to demand that Aurora surrender her residency slot and descend in her place. He spends the family's single yearly doctor's visit on Anya and arranges transport within three days, blind to the cost.

But Aurora has already dialed Level One and joined the Apocalypse Recovery Project. As the Wardens' population check nears, she hides a liaison's message and lets Lucas believe she will return to him.

Then one day, he brought a girl back from the Warrens of Level Three, a fragile thing wasting away from sickness.
