The story
For seven years, Marcella gave everything to Grady Walquist—her kidney, her career, her whole heart. Yet his ex-girlfriend Zeth Beckinsale needed only seven days to reclaim his devotion, and even the son Marcella cherished, Seth, wished aloud for Zeth to be his new mother. Under the candlelight, Grady kissed Zeth, and Marcella quietly walked out of the home she had built.
She sends a confirmation to a classified organization in a remote, deserted area, offering up her life for her country. The reply is stark: her identity will be erased, and she cannot leave for ten years. Returning at dawn, she finds Zeth's shoes still at the entrance and Grady emerging from the master bedroom, accusing her of neglecting Seth's birthday.
When she tries to enter the bedroom, Grady shoves her back against a table, and Zeth appears in her nightgown. Seth demands an apology for Zeth, his eyes full of disgust for his own mother. Marcella closes her eyes, forcing back tears, the past seven years suddenly meaningless.
