No Way Back to Summer

Ten years after losing his college place, Ezra Kerr sells burgers from a street cart, his left leg gone. When Marisa Doyle appears, she sends him a million dollars and confesses she once gave his Wexley University acceptance letter to Tobias. A runaway truck kills her, and Ezra wakes on the day everything changed: the SAT results that named Tobias the family's real son and left Ezra the fake heir nobody needed.

His parents and Marisa celebrate Tobias, while Ezra quietly accepts community college and refuses their money. He meets Wexley admissions officer Paul Whitcombe, who agrees to keep his admission confidential, and submits a paternity test to learn whether Tobias is truly a Kerr. When Tobias demands Grandpa's inheritance and heirloom pocket watches, Ezra refuses.

With Marisa's warning ringing in his ears, Ezra walks away to cook himself a meal, done groveling for a family that never saw him.
